Astronomical Telescopes at the Turn of the Century
نویسنده
چکیده
The final years of the XXth Century and the initial years of the XXIst Century are witnessing a revolution in the construction of large telescopes. This has been possible thanks to the availability of both thin mirror technologies and large computing power. Astronomy is thus benefiting from this. Indeed the turn of the century has been rich with new discoveries, from the detections of extrasolar planets to the discovery of the the farthest galaxies ever seen or the detection of acceleration in the expansion of the Universe. Spain is leaving her imprint on the telescope making revolution and is promoting the construction of a 10.4 metre telescope in the “El Roque de Los Muchachos” observatory, on the Island of La Palma, Spain. The Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) is currently at an advanced stage of construction, with science operation expected to start early in 2006.

Shabnumā-wa-Rūznumā A Rare Astronomical Instrument Extant in Two Specimens
In India, there are extant two nineteenth century specimens of an otherwise unknown astronomical instrument called Shabnum?-wa-R?znum? with which observations can be done both in the day and at night. While the R?znum? is nothing but a sine/horary quadrant, the Shabnum? appears to be inspired by the Sanskrit instrument Dhruvabhrama-yantra which was invented by Padman?bha in the first quarter of...

Maraghe observatory was built by such engineers as Moayiededdin Orozi etc. under supervision of Khaje Nasireddin Tousi in 7th century AH. The most significant feature associated with Maraghe observatory is the fact that architecture is employed to achieve astronomical purposes in this site. The reason for preferring observatory by astronomers was the fact that these units are superior to wooden...

There are fools who pretend to predict the future Erasmus (1510) ABSTRACT It is argued that the astronomy of the twenty-first century will be dominated by computer-based manipulation of huge homogeneous surveys of various types of astronomical objects. Furthermore combination of all observations with large telescopes into a single database will allow data mining on an unprecedented scale.

Celestial positioning has been used for navigation purposes for many years. Stars as the extra-terrestrial benchmarks provide unique opportunity in absolute point positioning. However, astronomical field data acquisition and data processing of the collected data is very time-consuming. The advent of the Global Positioning System (GPS) nearly made the celestial positioning system obsolete. The n...
